I have been hearing so many positive reviews about this book, which made me finally caved and purchased a copy for myself. First I want to say, I did like the book. I may be critiquing it with my personal opinions and all, but the overall growth and coming of age concept was not to bad. This book is a trilogy, thus far and the second one is coming out later this month. We were left on a mean cliff hanger so Yes, I already pre-order book 2.
Here are my beefs with the book:
So here is how I feel about this book. 1st I honestly do not think this book should be categorized as a Mature YA. It is WAY too graphic and sexual for what I believe a proper YA should be.
Sorry I disagree there. I think it appeals to the teens that are 18+. If the kids were in college and this was categorized as New Adult genre then I wouldn’t have any beefs with it, but it is not. The kids are in high school, except one, and the adults act like they are in high school.
Second, do not be deceived by the title, this is no fairy tale story with true loves kiss and a HEA. We don’t have any true Princes or Princesses. We just have many spoiled, selfish, rich kids that think they can do and act however they want with no consequences. Let’s just say, this book would run perfectly with Gossip Girls. (By the way I Love Gossip Girls)
Now I am going to talk about this book as a New Adult, because I “PERSONALLY” believe it should be categorized as such. In this case I will tell you. I enjoyed it. I really liked our heroine and her sassiness. She makes you want to root for her because of how B*tchy all the other people around her are acting. She is strong - emotionally and mentally. She ‘tries’ to not let others get to her. I actually admire that. Not all of us our dealt with an easy life. Ella was far from that, but she pulled up her ‘boot-straps’ and did what she had to do. Bravo chica!
Our main character Ella is a true Cinderella in every sense. She goes from rags to riches in a blink of an eye. She has had a difficult life, living with her mother and numerous ex-boyfriends. Jumping from city to city and state to state, she has never had a true home. Her mother got sick and this forced Ella to take up the role of the adult. She was earning a living, until she was discovered by Mr. Callum Royal. He “saves” Ella from her currently life and situation bringing her to live with him and his 5 sons in a mansion that should have its own zip code. Ella is not accepted by the brothers, and they make it known to her from moment one. They are constant back-biting, snide comments and derogatory remarks. She has tough skin, but everyone has their breaking point. Ella not only faces these cruel words and actions at the house, but also in the private school Mr. Royal has signed her up in. She is now at the mercy of the Royal brothers, who run the school.
I feel so weird, as an adult I really enjoyed this book. I was up all night reading it. It was gripping and sucks you into their soap opera drama. The Royal Men are dangerous. Not just physically, but emotionally and mentally. They hurt those that they care about, even when they don’t mean to do it. The family situation is sad and I feel bad for the boys, until you see how they act. It is hard to love your antagonist in this story.
My overall thoughts on Reed Royal. He is your perfect example of a Byronic Hero. You hate him and love him all at the same time. He has power, money, looks, popularity, athleticism, charisma, and is a complete douche bag to Ella. He is the second brother our of the five and he is the ring leader. They all follow and step into line with him. Reed and Ella's chemistry is on fire. You can feel the heat coming off the pages. It is crazy. He is not only your new book boyfriend, but our anti-hero. I personally like some of the other brother s a little bit more. For Ella, Reed is what her heart and body wants; and he has no problem comply to her needs.
If you like high schoolers that act like adults. A dirty YA/NA with 5 HOT Men! Then yes this is your book. Other wise you may need to pass it. If you can't stand the heat don't go into the kitchen. Well, my friends this book is on FIRE! .
