Eleven-year-old Gregor leads a typical life with his mother and sisters. But nothing has been the same ever since his father mysteriously disappeared.
However, all of that changes when Gregor and his two-year-old sister, Boots, crawl through a grate in the laundry room of their apartment building. They then discover the Underland, a strange world under New York City. In this underground realm, humans; enormous bats; giant cockroaches; huge spiders; and rats bigger than people dwell in their own separate lands.
The humans and the rats have always hated each other. But now they’re on the brink of war. Gregor doesn’t want to be involved in any way. But when he finds out that he is supposedly “the warrior”, who is the subject of a prophecy, and that this prophecy may lead him to his father, he decides to embark on the quest foretold in the prophecy. Will Gregor find his father and return to the Overland safely?
I found this book at Barnes & Noble. Originally, I only wanted to read it because Suzanne Collins wrote it (who you have likely heard of: she is the author of The Hunger Games). This series is not very similar to the Hunger Games trilogy. Despite that, though, I enjoyed it just as much (perhaps even more so).
One topic this book addresses is the stereotype. Many of the characters believe that all rats are evil, just because most are. Stereotypes are just as common, and often untrue, in the real world as they are in this series.
The Underland Chronicles must be read in order. So if you want to read them, you’ll need to start with this first epic installment.
The action and adventure continue for Gregor in this stunning fantasy from Suzanne Collins, bestselling author of the Hunger Games. New cover art coming July 1st!
Gregor swears he will never return to the Underland, that strange world below New York City. But he is a key player in another prophecy, this one about an ominous white rat called the Bane. The Underlanders know there is only one way to lure Gregor back to their world: by kidnapping his little sister, Boots.
Now Gregor's quest reunites him with his bat, Ares, and the rebellious princess Luxa. They descend into the dangerous Waterway in search of the Bane. If Gregor does not fulfill the prophecy, his life, and the Underland, will never be the same.
It’s been a while since Gregor’s adventures in the Underland, and he doesn’t ever want to go back there again. But another prophecy calls for his presence, involving a likely vicious white rat with white fur called the Bane. So the Underlanders kidnap Boots to lure him back.
When Gregor once again reaches the Underland, he realizes that he must fulfill the prophecy, or else. Can Gregor complete his quest and once again get home safely?
In most cases, according to my opinion, the second book in a series is not as good as the first. But here, the second book is every bit as good as the previous one.
The third installment of New York Times bestselling Underland Chronicles, in which Gregor must stop a plague from spreading through the Underland, will feature fresh new cover art, coming July 1st!
Gregor's adventures continue in Book 3 of the New York Times bestselling series by author Suzanne Collins.
With two prophecies fulfilled, Gregor is now focused on the Prophecy of Blood, which calls for Gregor and Boots to return to the Underland to help ward off a plague. But this time, his mother refuses to let him go . . . unless she is allowed to travel with them.
When they arrive in the subterranean city, the plague is spreading -- and it claims one of Gregor's closest companions. Only then does Gregor start to understand how the illness plays with the fate of all warm-blooded creatures. But how can he help combat it?
Gregor and Boots must return to the Underland to stop a horrible plague. This time, Gregor’s mother insists on coming along.
Once they are in the Underland, Gregor’s mother catches the deadly plague. Can Gregor successfully find the cure before his mother and the others that are infected die?
One theme in this book is military control. The plague outbreak is found to have been caused by the general of the human army, Solovet, who was planning to have the plague be used as a biological weapon against the rats.
Once again, we see the stereotype as well.
Follow Gregor in the fourth enthralling adventure in Suzanne Collins' New York Times bestselling Underland Chronicles -- with gorgeous new cover art coming July 1st!
In Book 4 of the bestselling Underland Chronicles, Gregor is drawn ever deeper into a brewing crisis. For generations, rats have run the mice out of whatever lands they've claimed, keeping them constantly on the move. But now the mice are disappearing and the young queen Luxa is determined to find out why.
Gregor and Boots join Luxa on a simple fact-finding mission. But when the true fate of the mice is revealed, it is something far more sinister than they had imagined -- and it points the way to the final prophecy Gregor has yet to fulfill. His abilities are put to the test in this suspenseful, action-packed penultimate installment of Suzanne Collins's thrilling Underland Chronicles.
When Luxa, the queen of the human Underlanders, discovers that the Underland mice are going missing, she and Gregor embark on a quest to find out what’s happening. The results are stunning, and it all leads to the last prophecy that Gregor is in. Will Gregor and Luxa be able to stop the disappearances of the mice before it’s too late?
Collins has written yet another page-turner with both suspense and humor. “Vivid description, expert pacing, and subtle character development all enhance this gripping fantasy adventure.” (The Horn Book) It is so entrancing that you feel as if you’re watching all the events play out right before your eyes.
Everyone in the Underland has been taking great pains to keep the new prophecy, The Prophecy of Time, from Gregor. Gregor knew from the beginning that it must say something awful, but he never imagined just how awful: The prophecy calls for the warrior's death.
Gregor, his mother, and Boots remain in the Underland. A rat army is approaching. The final prophecy, The Prophecy of Time, mentions a code that needs to be broken---and fast. Worst of all, the prophecy foretells the warrior’s---Gregor’s---death. Can Gregor save the Underland and get his family back to the Overland?
This heart-pounding conclusion to The Underland Chronicles is the most addictive of all. It is impossible to put down. The cliff-hanger endings of each chapter hook the reader easily. The plot twists make the book even more immersive.
My Overall Thoughts on the Series as a whole:
My favorite book in the series is Gregor and the Code of Claw because it is the most exciting one in the series. I couldn’t stop reading any of these books.
My favorite character in the series is Gregor. At the beginning, he’s a regular kid. At the end, he’s willing to give up anything for his family and friends in the Underland.
This series is one
