What if Beauty was cursed, and the Beast was the only one who could save her? Don't miss WITHERING ROSE, a dystopian romance from bestselling author Kaitlyn Davis that reimagines the classic fairy tale of Beauty & The Beast.
"As the heat finally disappeared, I felt the bloom blossom in the very core of my soul, a rose just like my name--a ticking clock hidden behind a façade of beauty. From that moment on, my life would become a countdown, and all I could do was wait and watch as the petals of time slowly started to fall."
Omorose Bouchene has a secret--magic. There's only one problem. At the age of seven, an earthquake struck, catapulting her into a new world. A land made of skyscrapers and cell phones. Fast cars and fluorescent lights. A land where magic isn't supposed to exist and anyone who wields it is the enemy.
But after ten years of hiding, she's desperate to find a place where she can be free. Because all magic comes with a curse, and her curse is time--every ounce of power she uses strips days off of her life. The clock is winding down, and the only option left is to escape to the realm of the Beast. But the king of monsters isn't what he seems. And the more Omorose opens her heart, the more she comes to realize that the only person she may need to fear is herself.
*This is the second book in Once Upon A Curse, a series of interconnected stand-alone novels all set in the same fantasy universe.
Now I am a total sucker for Beauty and the Beast theme. I have an extensive collection of Belle items that I have collected while growing up. My friend, family and co-workers all know that I am a devoted fan of Belle. So when I found this story on Netgalley, it was a must read for me. What I enjoyed about this story was the fact it is nothing like I have ever read before. It is Beauty and the Beast twisted and shaken around. I enjoyed that we still get our HEA, but that is comes at a price.
It is kind of weird in the since it is a mix of dystopian and magical realms that merger together. There is magic, mixed with modern day advances, mixed with fairy-tale themes. So pretty much it is like ABC’s Once Upon a Time for young adults.
Omorose is a princesses with a future already chosen for her. She knows that someday she will rule a kingdom and obtain her magical powers that will be handed down from her mother. She is excited and nervous for all these future plans that her parents have created for her, but she is striving to follow her mother’s advance to ‘be brave.’
At the age of seven she is heads off with her father to visit her betrothed, when a terrible earthquake changes everything. These two worlds collide and now she is trapped in a land where she doesn’t speak the language, and is dressed in clothing that is not normal.
Ten years later we flash forward to the main part of the story. Yes there was a lot of set up, but it doesn’t take that much of the beginning of the book, so don’t worry about that.
Omorose and her father are held on a compound were the goal is to get rid of all magic that is on the planet. Problem is Omorose has her powers now. For her protection her father forbids her to use them, but Omorose’s abilities need to be let out. She decided to run away to the only place left that could possible allow her to be herself. The Beast’s kingdom. No one ever goes there, and if they do they never return. She goes off and doesn’t just meet a Beast, but an entire kingdom of animals.
The Beast allows her into his castle to stay, but he doesn’t make it easy for her. She learns through perseverance and patience who the Beast truly is and the kind hearted man that lives inside him. There is a fondness that grows between them, but the more Omorose use her magic that more a piece of her withers away.
Cole has not had an easy life these past 10 years. He has lost many people he has cared about, or they trapped. He has been determined to free himself and his people, but he doesn’t know how. He has built a wall around his heart and his kingdom, so no more sorrow can come in. Cole is the Beast and Omorose breaks down his walls. He opens up to her slowly, but with each piece that falls away, more of her heart is taken with him.
Can the Beast (Cole) save Omorose from her magic? Can Omorose save the Beast from himself and help his people?
