Received a Copy from Netgalley for an Honest Review
When I read some review about this book, I was excited for it. The first few chapters caught my attention right away and I really enjoyed the dynamic between Annie and Charles, but once we got about 35% into it, all the sudden it turned into an erotica, which I was not expecting. I didn’t find any reviews that mentioned the amount of sex and graphic detail that is portrayed in this book. When I expect a Contemporary Romance, yes I know there is going to be sex. I am no prude, I have read my share of novels as such, but this one I wasn’t expecting. The first few scenes were as expected, but then the book continued on in EVERY chapter about their sex life. Their relationship at the beginning of the book was friendly with intense chemistry. Once they allowed to have a physical relationship it was like opening Pandora’s Box.
When we got about 80% through the book we started getting more back story of Charles and Annie. We learn of their tragic history. Their upbringings, their family dynamic, etc. To me it was like “FINALLY, here is the meat of the book.” Besides the constant sex scenes the overall story and premise was good.
Do you remember “Doogie Howser” from the 80’s and 90's? Well Charles is a type of Dr. Howser, which is pretty cool. I enjoy the over analytic guy that thinks too much before every situation. Be warn this is a nerdy book in the sense there is a lot of science’y talk. I am no science person. Heck, in high school I had to take my second semester of Biology 3 times just to pass. In college my roommate was a science T.A and tutored me. She was the ONLY REASON I Passed! (Thank you Nancy). So needless to say some of the jargon I was confused by. Which doesn’t hurt the story, but I think I would have caught a few more jokes or overall concepts when they spoke in science terms.
Charles, he is our Doogie Howser brain with the hotness of Jude Law. Every college girls dream. He keeps to himself, and hides under his Cambridge blue T-Shirts. He is considerate and patient with the undergrad students. He is in Indiana working on his fellowship through the School of Medicine at Indiana University. He rock climbs, which ends up being a type of symbolism through the book. He is 26 and has had his Degree since 23. The guy has a lot of baggage which we don’t find out until about oh 70% into the story. Literally I was twiddling my thumbs waiting for the ball the drop, and when it does it is a kind of eye-opening.
Annie, too smart for her own good. A dancer by hobby, passionate, and talented. She teaches dance classes while in college. Her best friend and roommate, Margret, is in the Psychophysiology program with her. She has had a major crush on Charles for about two years and is now biting-the-bullet to try to have some type of romantic relationship with him. She is very innocent when it comes to physical relationships with men. She learns many things through Charles. Think of Ana Steele from FSOG, but a science nerd instead of a book nerd. Very similar in some accepts, but Annie is a little more outspoken and willing to put Charles in his place compared to Ana and Christian dynamic.
This book has many similarities to our FSOG. Both characters start with the same first letter in their name.
The list can go on, and from other readers I can see I am not the only one that feels this way.
What I did enjoy about the book was the Rock Climbing. It was liberating to see the two characters do different type of physical activity that required them to exercise trust, and mental/physical strength. This was the only redeeming thing in the book. Honestly if you are a Fifty Shades of Grey fan, you “may” like this book.
The first book in the Hart University Series is Rikki during the gang’s freshmen year. The second book is about Will and Claire during their sophomore year. There will be four books in the series.
Will is Hart Universities new starting QB. He sat on the bench all last year and this time around he actually gets to play. He wants to standout for one particular person, Claire. Claire is known for two things: first her desire to be a doctor and second her band. She is a musician and loves it. She writes songs all the time and performs at different parties around town. At the beginning of the school year her heart is crushed and takes a vow of celibacy from relationships. She overall goal is to work on herself. She is determined to be comfortable in her own skin and not rely on any man to make her feel better. Problem is when you are super attracted to the star QB, who is also one of the kindest, sweetest guys you have ever meet, it can make you question whether "the vow for no relationship" is truly worth it?
I love Claire and Will. They each have their own crap (personal struggles they are dealing with) but in the end they realize that the only way they can be together is if they take care of themselves first. I love that. You can’t give yourself fully to someone if you, yourself are broken.
Claire becomes broken in the beginning of the book and we feel for her; but, it isn’t the same remorse I feel for Will. The guy seemed like he had everything going for him, then POW it all ended. He was left with nothing and he thought he had no one to lean on.
Claire and some other friends do an intervention on Will, and that is when the steam between him and her gets becomes smoky!
This story as dual POV’s. It has music, poetry, friendship, and sports. What I like is that, this book isn’t about a good girl turning a bad boy good. This is about two good, down-to-earth people that are just seeking to improve themselves, so they can be emotional and mentally healthier. It is so real and raw. I truly enjoyed it.
Totally worth the read!
Real stories with real problems.
Enjoy and let me know what you all think of it.
The first time I read The Backup, which is book 1 in this series, I wasn’t impressed. I didn’t like the main character that much, but I will not bore you with those details, because you can just read that in my review. I will say that this book was 100% better. Both characters have their flaws, but OMG it was so difficult to put down. Now this is book 4 in the series and I did not read 2 & 3. Each book can be read as a standalone within the series.
First we are reintroduced to Elijah. He is a former navy seal who was injured in battle. Part of his injury is his lower amputated left leg. He was asked to come to Montgomery University as a part-time instructor. He meets sassy and intelligent Maddy, who is not looking for any fling, especially with some hot shot that thinks ever girl that talks to him is hitting on him.
She grew up the daughter of a Navy Seal. Maddy knows how the lifestyle goes and is familiar with the ins-and-outs of the military. Injuries don’t faze her, so Elijah’s lack of a limb doesn’t bother her; she is more in awe of the man and the rest of his body.
These two have strong chemistry and even though there is history between Elijah and Josie, you can feel the strong attraction between Maddy and him. The only problem is Maddy tries to deny it and allows herself to go on a date with someone else. Jealousy, dominance, passion, and obsession are all in the story. Which made it so hard to put down. How about up all night kind of read. That is what happened to me.
Some issues that unfold within the store: There is a stalker after Maddy; and, she struggles with Elijah and Josie’s pass relationship. Elijiah has an ex-fling trying to stake her claim; as well, he has his own emotional and psychological struggles to overcome.
Can he be Maddy’s knight in shining armor? Or can Maddy show him that he can be her superhero and she can still be a strong independent women?
Should you read this one?
I think that is a yes.
If you have a soft spot for military men, smart sassy women, and someone that forms an attraction which evolves into an obsession then you should totally go for it!

She loves writing and reading — obviously :) — but when she’s not she enjoys playing with her two dogs, watching her favorite YouTube beauty bloggers, drinking coffee, googling new tattoos, and pretty much anything else that allows her to wear yoga pants and a sweatshirt.
At first, I saw him as everyone else did.
But then, I saw him for who he really was.
Recognized the beauty beneath the pain.
Loved the quirks disguising the insecurity.
Embraced the man who hid behind the boy.
But there was so much more…
More I didn’t know.
And once I did, I couldn’t let
Of the boy.
…even if his past is threatening

“You know what intrigues guys even more than the chase? ...A woman who’s out of reach. People want what they can’t have.”
This a great New Adult Book.
It is hits all the criteria for the genre.
over coming personal demons
I highly recommend the book!!!!!
Josie Savage has lived in the shadow of her football star father since he acknowledged paternity. Can a famously publicity shy California girl manage to navigate the attraction of two sexy star athletes?
I am giving it an overall 2 heart rating, because it was Okay, but I probably won’t read it again.
It is a hit or miss.
